Weaving Textures in Tapestry - 3 Day Workshop
This 3-day workshop covers some of the technical and design aspects involved in weaving different textures, and 3D effects in tapestry. You are welcome to bring your own coloured images, or use those supplied by Marilyn of the forest floor, lichens and leaves from our New Zealand native forests and from this you will design your tapestry. You can decide on the size, and sett for the tapestry, create the cartoon, choose the correct warp thread for the size of your tapestry, warp your frame looms and commence weaving.
This project offers many opportunities to utilize a range of tapestry techniques such as: choosing the colours in your weft bundles, shape building, hatching, slits, eccentric weave, senna knots, French knots, and soumak, to create the illusion of lichens and forest textures.
This workshop is open to beginners and for those of you with prior tapestry weaving experience. Everyone will work at their own level and pace.
Experienced students will be shown how to insert supplementary warps to enable you to create a 3D effect in your tapestry. Beginner weavers will commence with some introductory tapestry techniques.
There will be time to warp up the frame looms and commence weaving your unique design, these can be taken away with you to complete in your own time. A frame can be provided, small $20, or large $30, along with a beautiful selection of colourful yarns that is included in the $10 small materials fee. If you already have a frame loom, bring it along and supplement with your favourite personal fine yarns. Further information of what to bring will be sent once your enrolment is confirmed.
This is a fantastic opportunity to take your artistic abilities to the next level under the expert guidance of practicing artist and master weaver Marilyn Rea-Menzies. Marilyn has designed this workshop, especially for you, to gain a rich experience and a deeper understanding of how to approach your own ideas for your future projects.
